How to Secure a Decent Seat on a Flight for Free

December 3, 2024

Due to fierce competition in airfare search rankings, most airlines now offer fare classes that require paid seat selection. However, unless you’re flying with a low-cost carrier, there are plenty of ways to secure a decent seat for free. Here’s how to navigate the process.

At the time of booking

If only middle seats are available or seat selection isn’t offered, proceed with the booking. However, if free seat selection is available, grab the best option you can. Even if it’s not ideal, you’ll have opportunities to improve your seat later.

After booking

Call the airline to request a better seat. Many "Plus" or "Comfort" seats are eventually assigned for free, so it’s worth asking. If it doesn’t work, try calling again — seat assignment often depends on the agent's discretion. Additionally, ask about the expected occupancy to gauge your chances later on.

When online check-in opens

Even when paid seat selection is in place, airlines sometimes release unselected seats for free during this window. If that's the case, be ready to check in as soon as it opens - usually 24 hours before departure.

At the airport

If you couldn’t secure a better seat online or by phone, ask the check-in agent at the airport. They might accommodate your request without focusing too much on your fare class restrictions. If that doesn’t work or you want to confirm an empty row, ask again at the gate before boarding.

On the plane

Some airlines, like United, provide live seat maps in their apps, allowing you to monitor seat availability during boarding. This can help you pick a better seat once onboard. Alternatively, you can act quickly when boarding is complete or right after takeoff.
